Do you plan on getting in a lot of street fights?
No style is better than another, it’s the person, not the style.
Anyway, Northern styles (Mantis and otherwise) are typically styles that rely on maintaining a distance from your opponent and use more kicks than Southern styles.
Wing Chun is a style for closer distance fighting.
Wing Chun is supposedly suited for very close combat situations and Mantis, if done correctly, does not require much space to be effective either. Both are not bad for the conditions present of a street fight.
I have been studying Wing Chun for a while and it places emphasis on simple yet effective techniques that one can use in a street fight. The main thing with Wing Chun Kung Fu is striking from the center line of the body. This makes it harder to defend against. Most of the “street fights” are short and involve alot of “hay makers” and mindless flailing around. Most people you come in contact with in a street fight will not be martial artists and just want to push and shove around. Your advantage is that with Wing Chun, you are already prepared for if they move upon you then you will know what to do. Wing Chun is a soft style which means that you don’t have to be super strong or big to defeat an opponent. The Mantis style is elegant and nice to watch but may take longer to learn and will be a bit more involved. Both are good but I can comment that Wing Chun can be quite useful when needed.
