I would have to say that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – Helio Gracie, Mitsuyo Maeda
Japanese Jiu Jitsu – Unknown, adapted by Samurai.
Muay Thai – Muay Boran Ancient.

  2. Jason says:

The creators of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are Mitsuyo Maeda, Carlos Gracie & Helio Gracie.

Helio Gracie was actually taught by Carlos Gracie and Mitsuyo Maeda so he is not a true founder. He is still considered one of the founders though as he popularized and modernized Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The creators of Jap Jiu-Jitsu are Unknown; Adapted by Samurai (military caste) and civilians.

Muay Thai came from the martial arts Muay Boran and Krabi Krabong.

  3. THEHISTORIAN says:

Shinra Saburo Minamoto Yoshimitsu is consider the creator of Daito Ryu Aiki-Jujitsu. This was developed in the 1100s, and was passed to the Takeda Family in Hokaido Japan. Takeda Sokaku established the modern version of this fighting art. Jigoro Kano developed Judo in 1882 as the main sport in Japan and became Japans Traditional art for law enforcement. I know that for BJJ it was Helio Gracie, but I don’t know all of the other ones.

  5. judomofo says:

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu- Carlos Gracie via Mitsuyo Maede (a Judoka)

Judo: Jigaro Kano, he derived the art from various styles of Jujutsu and wrestling.

Jiu-Jitsu is actually a misnomer, as it the term Jiu-Jitsu was actually tied in with Kano’s Judo, whom he originally called Jiu-Jitsu, and thus all Jujustu often began being called Jiu-Jitsu in the more modern Japanese and Romanticised version.

There is no true founder as there are many many different styles, they derived from different art forms from the Samurai, The term wasn’t used until the 17th century as a generaliztion for any grappling style of the Samurai arts. So it is rather complicated as it goes from there, but essentially there is no known historical founder as it derived from many different forms and styles of Samurai arts and schools.

Muay Thai: Again no known founder, it derived from Muay Boran and Krabi Kabong, styles formulated by Thai soldiers. Each region had it’s own speciality that was then blended into the full curriculum of Muay Boran, again it went on from there but again no true historical founder of the style we know as Muay Thai today.

  7. Muay Thai Swede says:

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – Helio Gracie, Mitsuyo Maeda, Carlos Gracie.

Japanese Jiu Jitsu – Unknown, adapted by Samurai.
